| Abstract | In this meta paper, digital image processing and classification were applied on an IKONOS image in order to analyze its potential to map coral reef features called chapeirões at the Abrolhos Bank, BA. Only the blue band (485 nm) was able to visually identify the chapeirões, despite the relatively shallow tops. The main possible reason for this is the relatively turbid waters. A digital unsupervised classification based on image segmentation was performed on an enhanced blue band. Small similarity and area thresholds (5 and 15, respectively) were used for the image segmentation due to the reduced dimensions of the reefs. This work shows for the first time that it is possible to map chapeirões using IKONOS images. | ||||||
